What is Counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy which offers a safe, confidential place to talk about your life and anything that may be confusing, painful or uncomfortable. It allows you to talk with someone who is trained to listen attentively and to help you improve things.

How many Sessions will I need?

There is no minimum or maximum number of sessions. It can take a few sessions to become aware of changes and improvements in your life. Counselling can initially be quite difficult, but seeing a qualified, experienced counsellor, will ensure you leave the session feeling safe. You would normally have a review session, so many sessions in, for you and the counsellor to discuss your progress and decide how many more sessions you feel you need.

Different people will get different results from Counselling. Recent studies from the ‘International Centre for Clinical Excellence’ showed that 80% of clients in Counselling end up better off than those who didn’t seek any help.

How long does each session last?

Each session would normally last 50 minutes.

Do I have to pay private for counselling?

Your doctor may be able to refer you for free counselling but this may involve going on a lengthy waiting list, hence people deciding on a private counsellor. This way you can decide on the counsellor best suited to your needs.

What type of therapy do you offer?

Foundation Counselling likes to provide sessions to meet the individual’s needs, incorporating a pluralistic approach. The ‘person centred approach’ is the core of how we work. This approach fosters empathy, honesty and positive regard as essential. It is client led and believes that the client is their own best authority. If needed other approaches can be used, always having the client’s best interest at heart. ‘Cognitive Behavioural Therapy’ can be used and is better suited to client’s that prefer a more challenging approach and it can involve homework.

What happens if I miss a session?

It would be appreciated if you could provide 24 hours’ notice, if you need to cancel a session. We totally understand sometimes circumstances prevent this.
